There are two types of failures, surface and mechanical. 

A surface failure consists of bad sections on the disk surface.  All hard drives have imperfections on the disk surface.  The manufacture of the disk will initially mark these imperfections as not usable so the computer operating system will not use these sections of the hard drive.  Over time more imperfections develop but the operating system may not be able to distinguish the bad sections from the good ones.  This leads to hard drive corruption and the loss of your files and could even prevent the computer from starting.
